Header Tags: Why they matter in SEO content writing

Posted on May 8, 2014

Not many webmasters realize this, but header tags are very crucial in SEO content writing

Picture this: You find an online article about the healing wonders of Aloe Vera juice, and it’s formatted in such a way that it resembles one, long page of pure text.

Daunting, isn’t it?

Header tags break up text into digestible chunks, and let readers know what they can find in each section. This way, readers can go straight to the section which contains the vital information without reading through the text.

Search engines, too, can benefit from header tags, provided that the web content writer used them correctly. In her article, Why do Search Engines Like H1 Tags, professional web developer and author Jennifer Kyrnin explains that header tags help search engines easily index and categorize your web pages, thus guaranteeing higher page ranks and more back links in a shorter amount of time.

Now, a few things to remember

In order to unlock the power of header tags, copywriters need to remember these simple rules:

  • Stick to one set of H1 tag per page. H1 tags contains the summary (or the title, if you may), of the content of a web page. So it only makes sense that you should only have one h1 tag per page.
  • Use them in the right sequence. The purpose of headers is to provide your web page a structure which search engine spiders can easily interpret. If you’re going to kick off your web page with an h2 tag because “it looks pretty”, it’s going to defeat the whole purpose.

You don’t exactly have to be an HTML wizard to make awesome online content. But knowing the benefits and the best ways to utilize header tags can make a big difference in your SEO content writing.
