Adobe on Tuesday rolled out updates for Acrobat and Reader that tackle critical security vulnerabilities for the PDF applications.

According to an Adobe security bulletin, vulnerabilities in both Acrobat and Reader could cause the applications to crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system. Acrobat 9.2 and Adobe Reader 9.2 address that flaw. Release notes for both the Acrobat and Reader updates also promise more stability.

Adobe recommends that users of Acrobat 9.1.3 and Adobe Reader 9.1.3 as well as earlier versions download the updates.--Philip Michaels

SuperDuper update boosts speed

Shirt Pocket has released version 2.6.2 of SuperDuper, its backup program that creates a bootable clone of your hard drive. While only a minor change in version number, SuperDuper 2.6.2 features an increase in speed--the program is up to twice as fast under both Leopard and Snow Leopard.

Also new in this version is better Snow Leopard support, as SuperDuper now preserves the OS-level file compression used in Snow Leopard. The update is available now as a free update for all users. SuperDuper costs $28, and supports both PowerPC and Intel Macs running OS X 10.4 or later.--Rob Griffiths

Cocktail maintenance upgrade tackles bugs

Maintain released a maintenance update for Cocktail, fixing a bug in the general purpose utility that was causing high CPU usage on 32-bit Macs.

In addition, Cocktail 4.5.2 (Snow Leopard Edition) addresses compatibility issues with QuickTime X and the latest versions of supported Web browsers. The update also tackles an issue where Cocktail would report problems with diskutil.

Other Cocktail 4.5.2 enhancements include improvements to the procedures for clearing font caches and the dynamic link editor's shared caches. Maintain has a full list of changes in version 4.5.2 for the Snow Leopard edition on its Web site.--PM
