BANGALORE, INDIA: Cisco, a provider in networking, today announced that it is delivering a new Data Center 3.0 storage area network (SAN) technology designed specifically to help customers improve performance and scalability, simplify SAN management, increase data security and enhance SAN services in Virtual Machine (VM) environments.

The Data Center 3.0 entails the real-time, dynamic orchestration of infrastructure services from shared pools of virtualized server, storage and network resources, while optimizing application performance, service levels, efficiency and collaboration, said a press release.

It stated that the SAN technology includes three Cisco MDS 9000 family 8-gigabite-per-second (8-Gbps) fibre channel switching modules and new capabilities in Cisco's SAN operating system, which has been re-branded NX-OS.

It would help IT managers evolve towards a single operating system and a unified data center fabric, simplifying data center management and reducing costs.

"The new Cisco 8-Gbps switch modules are attractive because they can be used in any combination to increase port density and performance as needed, inserting them into an existing Cisco 9500 chassis without having to do a major upgrade," said Brian Perlstein, technical architect, Oakwood Healthcare System.

Cisco also announced its collaboration with VMware, a provider in virtualization solutions, to deliver joint data center solutions designed to improve the scalability and operational control of virtual environments.

This tie-up would provide virtualization consulting services to help customers create and deploy server, network and storage virtualization solutions across their data center that reduce costs by provisioning new applications quickly and more safely, while maintaining high levels of application performance.

The partners would also combine their expertise in networking and virtualization to introduce a new set of multidisciplinary professional services and reseller certification training in support of customers' data center virtualization strategies, said the press release.

"With today's announcement, VMware and Cisco have taken a significant step forward in enabling our customers to take advantage of an end-to-end virtual data center architecture to simplify how they deliver IT services to their clients" said Brian Byun, vice president of global partners and solutions for VMware.
