Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. today introduced a new high-capacity, high-performance, low-power line of 2.5-in hard disk drives that offer a with maximum capacity of 600GB.
The new MBF2-RC family of disk drives, which feature Toshiba's self-encrypting drive technology, offers as much storage capacity as any of the industry's 2.5-inch enterprise-class hard drives.
Rival Seagate last week also released high capacity 2.5-in data center-class drives , the Savvio10.4K serial-attached SCSI (SAS) family, with a storage capacity of up to 600GB.
Toshiba's new SAS drive has a 10,025 RPM spindle speed and a 6Gb/sec SAS interface for use in mid-range volume servers, mainstream storage arrays, blade and rack-mount servers and other business-critical, data-intensive applications.
By comparison, Seagate's new Savvio drive has a 4Gbit/sec SAS interface and a 10,400RPM spindle speed.
Toshiba's MBF2-RC drive reduces power consumption over traditional 3.5-in data center drives by about 27-30%, using a new enhanced power condition state, which enables it to rotate at a lower RPMs when not in use.
"With a 600GB maximum capacity, lower power consumption and smaller footprint, Toshiba's small form factor enterprise HDDs further enables the growing trend of enterprise system migration from 3.5-inch to 2.5-inch HDDs," said Joel Hagberg, vice president of enterprise marketing at Toshiba Storage Device Division, in a statement.
Certain models of the MBF2-RC series offer an option of drive-based encryption. Hagberg said encrypting data within the storage device simplifies storage deployments and provides an easier path to compliance with regulatory mandates for stronger security practices.
The MBF2-RC product line is available in 300GB, 450GB and 600GB capacities and will ship in volume in April. Samples are now available for design development.
